Savannah, Georgia. [August 2016]

New York is hot this summer – like, an American setting a thermostat in Europe hot. The brilliant solution is obviously to fly 2 hours south where the weather is much more…oh crap.

We find solace, however, beneath filigrees of Spanish moss blanketing the ancient oaks of Savannah, whether it’s walking through the tree tunnel at Wormsloe Plantation, between the public squares in historic downtown, or around the ancient tombs of Bonaventure Cemetery. It also helps that the city is young, vibrant, and bustling with energy; the people are friendly, their words are draaawlfully endearing, and their hospitality is down-south genuine.

And oh yes, the food. Wiley’s  Championship BBQ, Local 11 Ten, Pie Society – the choice between going to the beach versus passing out for a siesta in the hotel room is made woefully simple.

So while the degrees went a few digits higher, the stress level dropped multiples lower. Even offsetting that with a few pounds heavier…it’s not a bad summertime trade-off after all.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
